The Punch shot

This is my favourite shot in golf. It can be played from a long iron down to the sand wedge. Being able to hit the ball low into the wind is an extremely valuable asset. Even in calm conditions you may face a shot where the hole position may be on the top tier and in the back of the green. This is the perfect opportunity to play a punch shot where  you could land the ball on the bottom tier and run it onto the top.

This is the biggest difference between professional golfers and amateurs.

Keys for playing a really good punch shot

  • Choke down on your grip so that it is towards the bottom of the grip
  • Position the ball in the stance : at least a couple inches further back in the stance. Starting with a long iron in the middle of your stance, working back with each club until the short irons are just in front of your right foot.
  • Hand position is in front of the ball
  • An abbreviated follow through will help keep the ball lower in flight.

Play well and practice on the range.
